Cavan County
Cavan is a county in Ireland that is located in the province of Ulster and is part of the Border Region. The Ireland National Archives is responsible for the duties and roles of the Ireland Public Record Office. Cavan is one of Ulster’s three non-Northern Ireland counties. “The Hollow” is the Gaelic translation of Cavan. Cavan is the county seat and is located in the northeast of the county, near to the Northern Ireland border.
In the late 13th century, the O’Reilly family built a castle in the town. Around the same period, a Franciscan monastery was founded. The town received a charter from King James I of England in 1610. The O’Reilly clans were attributed with the expression “Life of Reilly” due to their power and wealth, having established and issued their own currency during the 1600s.
Cavan became a major rail connection between the midland and western lines and the Northern Railways in the late nineteenth century. In 1909, the Town Hall was constructed. The construction of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim began in 1938.
The Church of Ireland Kilmore Cathedral, three miles west of Cavan Town, has a Romanesque gateway originating from the 12th century. Farnham House, located northwest of Cavan, is one of the county’s biggest homes. It is claimed to have been constructed around 1810 for the Maxwell family, who held the title of Baron Farnham. The property and estate were sold by the widowed Lady Mairead Smith, and now serves as a luxury hotel.
A little-known fact about Cavan is that Dean Jonathan Swift is said to have written the great classic Gulliver’s Travels while vacationing in Mullagh, a lovely town in East Cavan. Gulliver, the lead character in the tale, was primarily based on Big John Doughty, a local giant who was so powerful he could lift a pony on his shoulders.

Birth certificates spanning back to January 1, 1864 are available for free online at the General Register Office. The documents were available to the public until 1870, but some were preserved at the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), which later became the National Archives; however, these records were permanently obliterated in 1922.
